Main Building of Riga Polytechnic; now - University of Latvia
The bulk of the educational buildings of Riga built in the second part of the nineteenth century is situated in the central zone of the City parks. One of the central roles in the landscape and city scenery is Riga Polytechnic (later - Polytechnic institute; now- University of Latvia). The author Gustavs Hilbigs (1822-83), the first Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, made the building in monumental forms with features of Romanic and Bizantic architecture. The first layer was built in 1866-69. Usually the buildings of gymnasiums have the symmetric plan solutions: there was a vestibule in the centre, wide stairs and assembly hall, but the classrooms were arranged to the corridors from the street side.
