Alksnaja Street is in Old Riga (starting from Marstalu Street to Kaleju Street). The total length is 135 meters. Documents dating back to 1401 refered to tis place as a platea Elrebrok (Latin Alder-grove [Alksnaja] Street).

The lower part of the street was damp due to Riga river (in fact it was a branch of Daugava river). Although the river started to fill in the 17th century, it is said that there were beavers living on the small riverbank in the 18th century.
