The Esplanade was partly covered with buildings in the early-twentieth century. The Commercial School (present Academy of Arts) and the State Museum (1903 -05, architect V. Neimanis) were built. These constructions were good examples of perfect environmental spatial organization in the important part of the City centre. As a result, the representative area around the Old City was developed. Both buildings are characterized by historism, which later on manifests as the imitation of the particular historical style (stylisation). The Museum is quite compact and symmetric, although this is not required by functional necessity or the characteristics of the land, or architectural reasons. The Museum is huge in scale, rich in Baroque forms; it has a majestic vestibule with entrance stairs and comfortable exhibition halls, which have a skylight on the second floor. The overhead cover is in places made of ferroconcreate constructions.
