Green areas of City Canal.
Square near National Opera House.

The first public building situated in the Green Area of City Canal was the I Town (German) theatre (present Opera House). It was developed according to the project of L. Bonstet (1822 - 85), professor of St.Petersburg Academy of Arts, under the supervision of architects F. Hess and H. Šels in 1860-63. The semi-rounded spectator's hall with 1240 places and 150 standing rooms and three balconies has good acoustics and pleasant proportions. The bulk of buildings erected at that time was of Eclecticism, but the compact, balanced theatre building with tall six-column portico of Jonic style seems to resemble the early-nineteenth century Classicism bloom.
