Academia Petrina in Jelgava

latvian

Academia Petrina is the first Latvian higher education and scientific center, the beginning of which is dated with 1775, when Mitau Academical Gymnasium was established. Although Academia Petrina never gained the status of university, it had a lot of preconditions for it. The name was gained in the honor of duke Peter Biron, who was the first rector of this establishment. The Gymnasium was closed during the I World War and evacuated to Taganrog. In 1922 when Jelgava Classical Gymnasium was established, the building of former Academical Gymnasium was handed over to it. After a reconstruction in 1949-1951 the interior was accommodated to the necessities of G.Eliass Jelgava History and Art Museum .

The building of Academia Petrina was created by architect Severin Jensen in styles of Baroque and Classicism in 1773-1775.
